Over the past few years, many of you may have noticed that I’ve shared very little artwork online outside of Space Opera Theater: Sequence Alpha. This isn’t because I don’t want to share my work—it’s because of the very real risk that others will take my digital art, use it, or even sell it without my consent, knowing that I have no legal recourse. This risk has only increased as my profile has grown, and it has made me extremely cautious about posting digital versions of my work. In fact, most of the images I do share are photographs of my physical prints, which at least offer some barrier to unauthorized use. This isn’t an isolated experience; many other artists I’ve spoken with share similar frustrations and fears.
One way to combat this problem is to move away from digital formats and publish artwork in physical, hardcopy form. That’s exactly what I’m doing with Unprompted—a collection that lets me share my art safely, without compromising its integrity or risking its unauthorized use. Starting in 2025, I’ll also be releasing a triannual catalog of my latest work called Artifex Machina, specifically designed to make my art accessible in a secure, tangible way.
